In a June 2, 1985 article, Los Angeles Times Music Critic Chris Willman described Blood on the Saddle’s self-titled, 1984 debut album as “One of the most absorbing vinyl wonders the city has produced in the last few years.” Later that year, in the December issue of Spin Magazine, Andrea ‘Enthal wrote, “Blood’s album is full of the flying finger-tips and heart-pumping roots-rock that puts cowpunk on the edge where rock is doing something new and a half twist different from what has gone before.”

Formed in 1983 by guitarist and lead vocalist Greg Davis, with bass player Ron Botelho and drummer Hermann Senac, the band was often called “Cow Punk” or “Country Punk.” Singer/guitarist Annette Zilinskas joined the band that summer after leaving the Bangles. Forty years, ten albums, and several line-ups later, Blood on the Saddle has transcended those labels and earned its place in music history.

On May 31, 2024, Ton-Up Records will release “First Blood,” featuring early versions of classics like “Ghost on My Heart,” “I Wish I Was A Single Girl Again,” and “I Thought I Heard Some Thunder.” Most notable are the acoustic duets with Blood on the Saddle founder and guitar virtuoso Greg Davis and co-lead vocalist Annette Zilinskas, who was still a member of The Bangs (Bangles) at the time. “First Blood” provides music fans with a unique experience of hearing the development of a sound that is as innovative today as in 1983 and taken rock music somewhere new and different.

The new Ton-Up Inc. deal covers the worldwide rights to Blood on the Saddle’s recorded music catalog, including classics such as “I Wish I Was A Single Girl Again,” “I Thought I Heard Some Thunder,” “Endless Highway,” “Born With a Hole in My Pocket” and more.

One of the most influential and important bands to emerge from the early 80s Los Angeles’ music scene, Blood on the Saddle arguably helped lay the foundation for the Alt-Country genre. Greg Davis successfully developed the idea of mixing Bluegrass with the aggression of Punk Rock, demonstrated in the band’s ten albums and forty-year career.

The original line-up consisted of: Singer/Songwriter/Musician Annette Zilinskas (The Bangles, The Ringling Sisters, Medicine), Drummer Hermann Senac (Guilty Hearts, Crowbar Salvation), and Bass Player Ron Botelho (Groovy Rednecks). The current line-up includes veteran drummer Dave Frappier, who has been with the band since 1994, and newly recruited bass player Joe Dean (The Wrinkling Bros.).

Under the terms of the agreement, the entire Blood on the Saddle catalog from 1984-2013 is now available under the Ton-Up Records label. The acquisition and release of the Blood on the Saddle catalog comes ahead of the upcoming 40th Anniversary of their self-titled debut album, released in March of 1984.

“I’m looking forward to working with Ton-Up Records” said Greg Davis. “The company is independent, artist owned, and they understand the music industry in the 21st century.”

“Blood on the Saddle’s music is exciting, unique, and has been a part of the culture for four decades,” said Edward Star, CEO of Ton-Up Inc. “Greg Davis is one of the most innovative and exciting musicians of his generation and I look forward to working with him to bring Blood on the Saddle’s music to the next generation of fans.”

In addition to Blood on the Saddle, Greg Davis has played with Dead Hippie, The Vandals, Candy Kane, and The Drivers. The deal also includes an album of solo recordings performed acoustically by Greg Davis, titled “Pure Blood.”

About Ton-Up Records

Ton-Up Records is the music division of Ton-Up, Inc, an independent creative company that draws its inspiration from the biker subculture that developed in 1950s Britain. “Doing the Ton” meant you were going 100mph or over on your motorcycle. Ton-Up, Inc. is taking that idea and applying it to our work and the creativity we bring to the world.

Greg Davis formed Blood on the Saddle in 1982. The twang-and-thrash band spearheaded the L.A.-based cowpunk scene that included Tex and the Horseheads, Gun Club, and Rank and File. “It’s safe to say Blood on the Saddle and the Hickoids both invented cowpunk independently,” says the singer-guitarist. “We opened for the Circle Jerks, Dwight Yoakam, Social Distortion, the Red Hot Chili Peppers, the Minutemen….” Singer-guitarist Annette Zilinskas, who was also Davis’s girlfriend, left the Bangles to front BOTS from ’83 to ’87.

The first six BOTS albums were released on labels such as Chameleon, Stiff, SST, and Kill Rock Stars. “We were provisionally signed to MCA in ’85, which meant we couldn’t do anything for six months, then after that they said, ‘Never mind.’”

“I met everyone in my current band in AA,” says Davis, who now lives in Encinitas. “I met Robby [Tavares, bassist] because he was wearing a Vandals T-shirt. I told him I was in that band and toured with them in Europe in ’89. I was just a hired guitar gunslinger playing dumb punk-rock songs.”

Davis just started playing locally with the new lineup, which also includes drummer Eddie Rojas.

“The big joke was that if Greg Davis asks you to be his bass player, don’t say yes,” says Davis. “I had two bass players who died from an overdose. Twice I had to cancel gigs because my bass player died. I told the promoters, ‘They’re dead, what can I do?’ When I started getting my bandmates from AA, their survival rate went up.”

With six months of practice under their belts, Blood on the Saddle will appear February 12 at the Shakedown Bar in Loma Portal.

To the fans and critics, it’s “country-punk.” To the band itself, it’s Western-folk-thrash.” Whatever you call the hybrid, Blood on the Saddle’s 78-r.p.m. blend of traditional and newfangled strains as much to Jimmie Rodgers as to Johnny Rotten. It may sound like a joke, but this is a band that makes the incongruous congruous.

Founder Greg Davis is certainly a study in contradictions. After quitting his job as guitarist for an L.A. punk band called Dead Hippie, he picked dobro with a friend who played banjo for handouts on the streets of New Orleans. He noticed that punk and bluegrass shared the same frantic tempos and returned to Los Angeles to form a band in which the twain would meet.

“Blood on the Saddle,” the band’s ’84 debut album, was one of the most absorbing vinyl wonders the city has produced in the last few years. Behind the harsh, driving Sturm and Drang of the live group were lovely melodies and a sense of traditionalism. More than any other so-called “cowpunks,” Davis captures the lonely spirit of the original folk-cum-country singers who sang to ward off the isolation of the open range.

In recent months Blood on the Saddle has been “flirting” with a major label but whether Davis is willing to make what might seem like compromises to bring out the accessibility of the material is a question mark. The group plays Saturday at Safari Sam’s. June 14 at Fender’s (with the Knitters) and June 15 at Al’s Bar (with the Long Ryders).

The post LA Weekly: BRINGING IT ALL BACK HOME first appeared on Blood On The Saddle.
